2016 mid-season

The year is moving along quickly. In spite of continuing heavy rains, we competed in Austin on May 1-2 and did well. After they canceled the Saturday races due to forecasted storms (that fizzled out and gave us time to play) we came out strong on Sunday.  Our qualifying times put us in Division B and we finished third. The boat moved well with help from our Cajun Invasion PUPs.

The very next weekend, May 7, we put together a strong team for the TDBA Houston Dragon Boat Festival on Buffalo Bayou. We won our first qualifying heat, but got edged out in the finals. Nevertheless, the boat moved well and we ended the day with times we could be proud of.

Grand Prairie was just two weeks later, May 21, and was very exciting with three boat capsizes. AHA stayed dry, thank goodness!  And again we paddled well with PUPs from Texas Phoenix and Cajun Invasion. No medals, but our times continue to improve and we finished in Division B again.

Moody Gardens Dragon Boat Island Party on July 10. Actually this is a full weekend of paddle events, including SUP and kayak races on Saturday with Dragon Boats racing on Sunday. We will be there.  Registration fee is only $15 per dragon boat paddler and you will have spectator access to all other events throughout the weekend. Come to the Island for a fun weekend on the water.

Change of plans for Cleburne Dragonfest. Due to a logistical problem with the City of Cleburne, this event has been moved to Sugar Land, Brooks Lake behind Fluor. This is familiar territory for us as it is the same venue as the October Regatta. Good news for us to eliminate travel time and expense. We are soliciting for PUPs now for this event. We only have a couple of open seats.

Unfortunately, one of our favorite venues, Red River Dragon Boat Festival in Shreveport, La is still trying to recover from repeated flooding and they have had to cancel their 2016 Festival, originally scheduled for September 17.

We will close the year out as always with the TDBA Houston Regatta on Brooks Lake in Sugar Land on October 8-9. A true family festival, there will be something for everyone at that event and All Hands Abreast will be in it to win it!! You can sign up now on the Roster Sign Up page. Please let us know ASAP so the captains can make plans.

If this list of events makes you want to jump in a boat and paddle with 20 of your closest friends, click on the CONTACT US page and send us a message. We often need one or two Pick Up Paddlers (PUPs) to complete the roster.

Even if you can't come out to paddle with us today, you can always dress the part in a T-shirt or tank from All Hands Abreast. We have pink tanks as shown here ($20), modeled by our very own Dortheia Armstrong, and long-sleeved black t-shirt ($25) with the same logo.  High quality, heavy-duty shirts will make you look like a Dragon Boater, even if you just want to stand on the shore and cheer.
